Continually develop and evolve South Carolina's 21st century workforce

  1. Nearly 235,000 students were enrolled in credit and continuing education programs at the System's Technical Colleges in 2005-06
  2. Students at the System's Technical Colleges are: 96% South Carolina residents; 36% minority; 64% female; 59% age 18-24 (Fall 2006, credit only)
  3. 49% of all SC public college or university undergraduates attended the System's Technical Colleges in Fall 2006
  4. 55% of South Carolinians in public higher education in SC participated in a credit program at the System's Technical Colleges in Fall 2006
  5. Associate degrees awarded by the System's Technical Colleges rose more than 30% over the past decade, compared to approximately 21% nationally (CHE & National Center for Education Statistics)

Address critical workforce areas, improving South Carolina's quality of life

  1. The System's Technical Colleges generated 33% and 44% increases in Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing graduation rates from 2002-06
  2. The average annual income for allied healthcare jobs in South Carolina is $40,000+, compared to the state's per capita income of $29,688 (US BLS & BEA 2006)
  3. Other areas with increased numbers of graduates to meet South Carolina's critical needs include:
    1. 154%, early care and childhood education
    2. 40%, surgical technology
    3. 64%, radiologic technology
    4. 21%, electronics engineering technology

Support and drive South Carolina's economic development

  1. The average annual income with an associate's degree or advanced training is $35,000+, at least $9,000+ more than a high school diploma or less (CHE Statistical Abstract 2007)
  2. Since its inception, the System's customized, start-up workforce training division has trained nearly a half of a million workers, for more than 1,800 companies
  3. In just a five-year period, the System's Center for Accelerated Technology Training (CATT) and its ready SCTM program have seen a 33% increase in trainees (2003-2007)
  4. CATT worked on 90 projects in FY2006-07; 51% for new industry and 49% expansions
  5. The System generated a $12.10 ROI for every $1 of state contributions (FY04)
  6. CATT generated a $16.50 ROI for every $1 of state contributions (FY04)
  7. Increased earnings of CATT-trained workers generated $7 million in additional tax revenue from 2001-05

At least 65% of jobs in the future will require an associate's degree or advanced training (Pathways to Prosperity, 2001); recent estimates increase this to 74%. (US DOL)
